Summer in Breckenridge: 10 Unforgettable Experiences You Can’t Miss

If you think Breckenridge, Colorado is just a ski town, think again. When the snow melts, Breck transforms into a sun-soaked mountain paradise bursting with wildflowers, alpine adventures, and small-town charm. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a solo escape, this high-altitude gem offers more than enough to fill your itinerary.

Here are the top 10 things to do in Breckenridge during the summer—each one guaranteed to help you soak up the best of this vibrant Colorado mountain town.

1. Hike to the Troll (Isak Heartstone)

If you’re searching for unique things to do in Breckenridge, start with the iconic 15-foot wooden troll named Isak Heartstone. Located on the Trollstigen Trail, this whimsical art installation is a hit with kids and adults alike.

Traveler’s Tip: Comfortable hiking shoes are a must when walking a lot in Colorado. Nortiv 8 for men and Columbia for women provide great comfort and value for the price. It’s also a good idea to be prepared and carry a daypack with a hydration reservoir. The air is dry in Colorado and you will get thirsty faster.

2. Ride the BreckConnect Gondola (for Free!)

One of the best free summer activities in Breckenridge is riding the BreckConnect Gondola from town to Peak 8. It’s a stunning way to take in mountain views, spot wildlife, and access the fun at Epic Discovery.

The gondola is free to ride for everyone; you do not need a ticket or reservation. It typically runs daily from June through early October. The one-way trip takes about 13 minutes, and the view is spectacular. The gondola cab is enclosed and can hold up to eight people.

Traveler’s Tip: I recommend a good pair of polarized sunglasses for the high-altitude glare.

3. Explore Epic Discovery at Peak 8

Traveler’s Tip: It is always a good idea to bring along a packable waterproof dry bag or a travel towel.

6. Go Wildflower Hiking on Boreas Pass

This easy-to-moderate trail is a local favorite for wildflower spotting and panoramic views. Access the trailhead by car via Boreas Pass Road.

Traveler’s Tip: The sun is strong in the mountains, so it is always a good idea to wear sunscreen and/or a wide-brimmed hiking hat to keep the sun off your face. I have a cool little Colorado wildflower ID book to help me learn the names of the different flowers I see that I like. Nerdy? Maybe, but it is helpful and fun.

7. Book a Jeep Tour or ATV Adventure

For an adrenaline rush and unbeatable photo ops, go off-roading with local tour companies like Colorado Adventure Guides or Breckenridge Jeep Tours. We got to know the lady who owned our VRBO place, and she invited us to go Jeeping with her and her Jeep club. That was such an adventure! The rocks were steep as we climbed up, but the view at the top was incredible!

I learned that when someone admires your Jeep, they leave various rubber ducks on your dashboard. Have you seen this?

Traveler’s Tip: If you do go, make sure you have a good windproof jacket, because it can get a little chilly with a strong wind up in the higher altitudes. I love this Northface rain jacket for women and this one for men.

8. Visit Breckenridge Distillery

Known as the “highest distillery in the world,” Breckenridge Distillery offers cocktail tastings, whiskey flights, and award-winning dining. You can also book a free tour in advance. Even if you do not drink alcohol (my husband doesn’t), it is still super interesting to learn how they do everything. We did not eat there, but I heard that the food is outstanding too.

Traveler’s Tip: This distillery is home to the official bourbon and whiskey of the Denver Broncos. For fans who want to recreate the experience at home, try a travel whiskey tasting kit or mixology set.

9. Attend a Summer Festival or Art Fair

From the Breckenridge International Festival of Arts (BIFA) to live music on the Riverwalk Lawn, Breck knows how to celebrate summer. Check the GoBreck Events Calendar before your visit.

Just a 20-minute drive from downtown, Sapphire Point Overlook offers breathtaking views of Dillon Reservoir and the Tenmile Range. It’s especially beautiful at sunset—and easy to reach via a short, paved trail.
